It's first grade time!

We are excited for first grade! We have been getting ready.  We have learned lots of math like addition and subtraction.

We love to read nonfiction books.  For example, we read books about animals and American symbols.

In writing, we learned about stop signs, to have neat writing, and to add who, what, where, when, and why to our stories.

We also love science and can't wait to see what we will learn and the experiments we will try in first grade!

Mrs. Pellizzaro taught us about states of matter.  We made Oobleck!

I am excited for tidepools.  You get to go to school with no backpack and go on a field trip with your parent.

First grade is going to be hard work, but I think we will have fun!

We were excited to meet our first grade teachers yesterday!

Daily 5

Our class does Daily 5 at school each day in the morning before lunch.  There are many Daily 5 activities to do.  We have Read to Self, Word Work, and Work on Writing.

We practice our trick words too.  We do all of these activities to help us learn words.

We have so much fun!

American Symbols

Our class learned a lot about the American symbols.  We learned they stand for freedom.  We learned about the American flag, the Bald Eagle, the Statue of Liberty, and the Liberty Bell.

The American flag has 50 stars for the 50 states.

The bald eagle stands for strength.  They build nests up high in trees.

The Statue of Liberty holds a torch in one hand and a tablet in the other.  It stands for friendship between countries because it was a gift from France.  You can go inside the statue.

The Liberty Bell has a big crack in it.  It cracked on the first ring.  They rang the bell on Washington's birthday.

We loved learning about these symbols and reading nonfiction books about them!

Pirate Day

Last Friday, Mrs. Libby planned Pirate Day.  First, Mrs. Libby's mom read How I Became a Pirate.

Then we had pirate Daily 5.  Our favorite station was making the pirate flags.

Mrs. Garber came into our room and said someone dropped off a pirate message at her desk.

We started looking for clues.   The classroom clue told us to go to the art room.  Then it told us to go to the lunch room.

The lunchroom clue told us to go to where the crow's nest is.  So we went outside on the playground.  We looked up high and some of us looked down low.  Jordyn found the treasure box!  It had golden coins and eye patches in it.  It was amazing!

After art, we had special math stations in the gym.  It was fun having math stations in the gym in a pirate way!

Kip took a video of Kellan creating a subtraction number story while his teammates walked the plank.

At the bowling station, kids had to subtract the number of pins that fell from 10.

The whole day was great!  It was fun having Pirate Day!

Mrs. Libby's Class plants with Mrs. Begin's Class

On June 3, we planted seeds with Mrs. Begin's second grade class.  We planted pumpkin seeds and Mrs. Begin's class planted cherry tomatoes.  We planted the seeds in cups outside by the spider.

Over the summer, the seeds will grow into plants.  When we come back to school in September, the fruit will be ready to eat.  The cafeteria will be able to use them in the food that they make.  The fruit will make us stronger.

We had lots of fun!  It was marvelous!  After, we had ten extra minutes and we played with the second graders on the playground for centers!

Jump Roping with Mark

Last Friday, we jumped rope with Mark in the gym and we tried jump roping as well.  Cam and Tori did mystery jumps and super sonic jumps.

After we saw Mark jump rope in the gym, we tried it on the hot top in the morning.

Jumping rope is healthy for your heart.  We had so much fun with Mark!

Memorial Day Assembly

Last Friday the whole school had a special Memorial Day concert.  We were in the cafeteria and we were singing along to the songs.  The whole school was there with 8 veterans.

Mrs. Mulligan's class put on a special dance for us and the second graders said a poem.

Mrs. Alvarado picked five friends to wave the flags during the song "You're a Grand Old Flag".

It was a very special day.  I felt very happy that the veterans were able to come to our school.
