Each week your child is introduced to 3 new words. These popcorn words, also known as sight words and high frequency words, are words that regularly pop up in Kindergarten reading and writing.
Throughout the week, he/she will practice spelling, identifying, and reading these words. They will get a copy of these words to keep in their word bag in their book box so they can practice during school and a sheet with all 18 weeks of words was sent home last week.
Every third week, I will assess all the words students have learned so far this year.
Week 1: the, to, and
Week 2: a, I, see
Week 3: it, my, like

Looking for new ways to practice sight words?
- Have your child write the word on a piece of paper. Tape the word to a doorway. Every time they enter or exit a room they have to read the word, then high five it.
- Play a memory match game with the words
- Write the words in shaving cream or kinetic sand
- Use the current week's words in a sentence including past week's words
- Play sight word bingo *
- Have bubble wrap laying around? Write a word on each circle, and have your child pop the word if they read it correctly.
- Play hopscotch! Write a word in each box.
- Write letters on labels and adhere them to legos. Have your child build the sight words.
